Carterton is the art centre of the Wairarapa, home to many authors, illustrators and painters. This fantastic creativeness flows through our small town’s attractions. Paua World an amazing gift shop showcasing the paua shell in its many forms; Stonehenge Aotearoa is a working adaptation of the original English Stonehenge.

For the more adventurous, try tramping in the Tararuas, a trip to Waiohine Gorge or a range of tramping trails around Mount Holdsworth.

The Rimutaka Cycle Trail is a ‘Great Ride’ on Nga Haerenga. Extending from Petone on the foreshore of Wellington harbour to the Wairarapa, this ride takes in urban and rural landscapes with exceptional experiences on the historic Rimutaka Rail Trail and the Wairarapa south coast.

Whether you have a little time or a lot of time, make sure you check out some of the great things to do in town. Taste the creativity at Regent 58, a craft beer brewery just behind the shops on the main street. Have a pain au chocolat at Cafe Mirabelle or pop up to Clareville Bakery, winner of NZ’s Best Pie award in 2014.

We are five minutes drive from the Boutique town of Greytown, a wonderland of Victorian wooden buildings, featuring magnificent cafes, quirky antique stores, art shops, and designer clothing, shoes and homeware.

Or wend your way through Gladstone and Martinborough vineyards, where you will find superb wine and fine dining in abundance.

Local annual events include the Martinborough Fair, Tauherenikau Races, Wairarapa Balloon Festival, Toast Martinborough, Harvest Wine Festival, Golden Shears, Wings over Wairarapa and many more.
